019 is a transdisciplinary platform that develops intermediate spaces for intuitive experimentation, collaboration and contact between architecture, graphic design and visual art. 019 always presents new possibilities and disrupts common ways of exhibiting in artistic and non-artistic spaces. As a hospitable occupier of the space, 019 invites artists to explore and reveal the potential of these spaces. Subtle, subversive interventions criticise and influence the functioning of public space, challenging established norms and activating the environment from within. In this way, 019 creates new interfaces between art and society from a project space in Ghent, in public spaces and at institutions at home and abroad.

The jury on 019:

019 is a mecca for artistic creation. Due to the freedom and playfulness of the collective and the building, there is a lot of room for experimentation in terms of form, materiality and function. 019 unabashedly takes the city by storm, claiming space for applied arts in all their aspects and manifestations. Within the rigid rules of society, 019 is a refreshing, slightly anarchic place that keeps us on our toes.

How did the idea for this project come about?

Our idea for this project originated in 2013 when, as an artist collective called “Smoke & Dust”, we launched our nineteenth initiative by reviving an abandoned welding factory in the Dok Noord area. What started out as a temporary project, under the name 019, quickly grew into something much bigger, both in terms of size and ambition. Although Smoke & Dust as an organisation still forms the basis, the project has developed a separate entity: 019. What was initially a temporary venture has now evolved into a permanent and collective initiative.

What makes your project so special?

The multiple and collective authorship and ever-changing architecture of 019 keeps the space always in flux. Having different disciplines working together creates an environment in which new art forms can flourish. Scenography acts as a connecting link, connecting not only the artworks but also artists, audiences and casual passers-by. The strength of 019 lies in its ability to produce and present art in a collective manner. The project transcends individual artistic practice and creates space for collaboration and experimentation.

Do you have any further plans for this project?

Definitely! Although our future in these premises is uncertain, we are determined to organise projects here for a long time to come. The building serves as our permanent home base and is a crucial generator for a wide range of initiatives inside and outside the building. This space not only provides a place for creation and experimentation but also forms the heart of our activities, and from here we are constantly developing new ideas and projects. The building continues to evolve with us and will undoubtedly undergo many more interventions and generate many more platforms. Furthermore, as a collective, we are always exploring the possibility of national and international collaborations and projects.
